Yes!

The priest Ruiyan called “Master!” to himself every day and answered himself “Yes!” Then he would say “Be aware!” and reply “Yes!” “Don’t be deceived by others!” “No, no!” Peter delves into the profound meaning behind this seemingly simple practice of Ruiyan Shiyan, moving beyond interpretations of self-affirmation or mere remembrance. Connecting it to Ruiyan’s earlier encounter with Master Yantou, Peter highlights the challenge of clinging to fixed ideas of truth or a “fundamental unchanging principle.” This talk emphasizes that true realisation isn’t about attaining something, but about the ongoing practice of letting go of self-deception and the illusion of separation, echoing Ruiyan’s daily vow: “Don’t be deceived by others!” This koan serves as a powerful reminder that the path is not about seeking an external truth, but about fully embodying the present moment, where “Master!” and “Yes!” illuminate themselves without reliance on a separate self.

This teisho, “Ruiyan Calls ‘Master'” Case 12 from the Gateless Barrier, was given by apprentice teacher Peter Bursky at Autumn sesshin 2025 at Kodoji.
